Sushi in Buenos Aires

I´ve been out for sushi three times since I arrived in BA and had pretty decent sushi each time.  My first sushi experience was the Soul Cafe in Las Cañitas, which served up better mixed drinks and attractive clientele than sushi.   Next, was Mundo Bizarro, conveniently located one block from previous apartment in Palermo Soho.   Mundo´s sushi was pretty good and the atmosphere reminded me of some ranodm bar in San Francisco´s Mission District, but they only serve sushi on Monday nights.   And finally, there´s Gran Bar Danzon in Barrio Norte, which serves great sushi in a beautiful -  albeit slightly trendy - space.   The beautiful people of BA seem to flock here, which makes for a nice backdrop.  Ah, one strange thing about Danzon.  During my visit, there was only one overworked sushi chef while there were about 15 young waiters mostly standing around looking for something to do.   Regardless, the sushi was great.

Green Bamboo (Vietnamese)

When I need a break from parrilla, I head to the Green Bamboo in Palermo Hollywood. Great Vietnamese (and as far as I know, the only Vietnamese in BA) at reasonable prices. It can get crowded after 10:30pm, especially on the weekends, but they do have seats at the bar. The barman, Peter, is a Belgium expat who speaks English.

Best Barman Serving the Best Drinks in BA

Jeremias is a fun, entertaining, all around good guy and great barman who may be serving the best cocktails in BA at the Restcate, 1762 Bonpland, in Palermo Hollywood. Sit at the small bar, chat up¨Jere,¨ and enjoy his creations. If you like vodka, try a caipiroshka, currently my favorite.

La Dorita (for Best Parrilla)

I´m probally biased because La Dorita is only blocks from my apartment, but I´ve tried a good number of Parrilla restaraunts in Buenos Aries and La Dorita is by far my favorite. You absolutely cannot go wrong with the Pollo Deshuesado. There´s two La Dorita´s and they´re diagnol from each other. One is more modern and spacious while the other has old warm charm. If there´s room, go with the old world charm.

La Dorita is located at Humboldt and Costa Rica, Palermo Hollywood, tel. 4773-0070.

Dubliner (Irish Bar)

Dubliner, on Humbolt and Honduras

Irish bars have begun to spring up everywhere in BA and most are overcrowded with expat fraternity brothers. But if you seek a ¨tranquilo¨ evening, a super-friendly bar staff who double as the resident dj´s (ask to see their eclectic, though U2 oriented CD collection), and some fried calamari (or something close to calamari), then this is your place. Stop by Friday nights around 11:00pm to catch ¨Flying Haggis¨ playing U2 covers, Argentine hits, and much more with their own bagpiper.

La Vieja Bodega

La Vieja Bodega, located on Bonplant and Gorritti

This cozy and dimly lit ¨bodega¨ serves up a damn fine Ravioli with Bolognesa.
